Shape dynamics of a red blood cell in Poiseuille flow

نویسندگان

چکیده

In this study, we used a three-dimensional biconcave capsule with residual stress field to numerically simulate the dynamics of single red blood cell (RBC) in both confined and unconfined Poiseuille flow. We confirm that taking stress-free configuration RBC be an oblate near-sphere leads results which are most consistent experiments shear flow settings.

Full dynamics of a red blood cell in shear flow.

At the cellular scale, blood fluidity and mass transport depend on the dynamics of red blood cells in blood flow, specifically on their deformation and orientation. These dynamics are governed by cellular rheological properties, such as internal viscosity and cytoskeleton elasticity. In diseases in which cell rheology is altered genetically or by parasitic invasion or by changes in the microenv...

Shape diagram of vesicles in Poiseuille flow.

Soft bodies flowing in a channel often exhibit parachutelike shapes usually attributed to an increase of hydrodynamic constraint (viscous stress and/or confinement). We show that the presence of a fluid membrane leads to the reverse phenomenon and build a phase diagram of shapes-which are classified as bullet, croissant, and parachute-in channels of varying aspect ratio. Unexpectedly, shapes ar...

Non-Equilibruim Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Poiseuille Flow in a Nanochannel

The numerical simulation of a Poiseuille flow in a narrow channel using the molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) is performed. Poiseuille flow of liquid Argon in a nanochannel is simulated by embedding the fluid particles in a uniform force field. Density, velocity and Temperature profiles across the channel are investigated. When particles will be inserted into the flow, it is expected that the...

Chaotic dynamics of red blood cells in a sinusoidal flow.

We show that the motion of individual red blood cells in an oscillating moderate shear flow is described by a nonlinear system of three coupled oscillators. Our experiments reveal that the cell tank treads and tumbles either in a stable way with synchronized cell inclination, membrane rotation and hydrodynamic oscillations, or in an irregular way, very sensitively to initial conditions. By adap...

Nonlinear dynamics of a microswimmer in Poiseuille flow.

We study the three-dimensional dynamics of a spherical microswimmer in cylindrical Poiseuille flow which can be mapped onto a Hamiltonian system. Swinging and tumbling trajectories are identified. In 2D they are equivalent to oscillating and circling solutions of a mathematical pendulum. Hydrodynamic interactions between the swimmer and confining channel walls lead to dissipative dynamics and r...
